Rana Kumbha of Mewar built this great defensive fortress on a 3,500 feet (1,100 meters) high hill overlooking the approaches from Ajmer and Marwar. It is one of the finest examples of defensive fortifications not only in Rajasthan but in India. Kumbhalgarh fort is surrounded by a majestic thick wall which is approximately 15 Km long. It has seven huge gates and claims to be the second longest wall in the world after the Great Wall of China. The width of the wall varies from 15 to 25 feet. The Battle of Haldighati was fought on 18 June 1576 between the Kingdom of Mewar and the Mughal Army led by king Mansingh. Maharana Pratap led the armed forces of Mewar against the Mughals. The Battle of Haldighati was actually for the Rajputana honour. Many powerful kings of Rajasthan, including those of Jaipur, Bikaner and Boondi, were with Akbar. Rana Pratap had already alienated them by taunting how they had given their daughters and sisters to Akbar to barter peace. In 2003 an imaginative museum dedicated to the great Maharana was opened and unsurprisingly named the Maharana Pratap Museum, Haldighati.
